EPUB reading guide
How to open an EPUB: Apple Books, Kindle, Android & Kobo
Choose your device and follow official EPUB import instructions for Apple Books, Send to Kindle, Google Play Books or a Kobo eReader.
A standard EPUB needs a reading app that supports its file and layout. Choose your device below, keep the original file as a backup, and follow the linked official instructions. This guide covers files you already have permission to use. Each future DMN Publishing edition still needs its own compatibility review; the web sample is not a test of the final EPUB.
iPhone or iPad: Apple Books
Save the EPUB to your device or iCloud Drive, find the file, then tap it to open it in Books. If you downloaded it from Safari, look in the Files app’s Downloads folder. Finish downloading the file before opening it.
Apple documents this opening workflow in its EPUB creation and viewing guide; its Downloads help explains where to find saved files.
Mac: import into Books
In Books, choose File → Import and select the EPUB. Apple also describes dragging supported files into Books. Keep a separate copy of the original file if you want a backup.
Follow Apple’s Books import instructions.
Kindle: Send to Kindle
Amazon lists EPUB as an input for Send to Kindle. Sign in to Amazon and follow that service’s file-selection and sending steps. After processing and delivery, open the document from your Kindle library. This describes the sending workflow; it does not promise that an EPUB copied directly by USB will open on every Kindle.
See Amazon’s supported-document guidance. Check the contents and illustrations after delivery; successful sending alone does not establish that a particular illustrated edition renders correctly.
Android: Google Play Books
Locate the downloaded EPUB on your device and use Open with → Play Books or Upload to Play Books. Menu wording can vary. In Play Books, look under Library → Uploads. This sends a copy to your Google account; it is a different library from your local DMN saved list.
Google’s Android EPUB upload instructions give the current steps. Enabling PDF uploading is only needed for PDFs, not for an EPUB.
Windows or a computer browser: Play Books
In your Google Play Books library on a computer, choose Your books, then Upload files, select your EPUB and confirm. Find it in Uploads. This is an account-based upload, not a file opened locally by the browser.
Use Google’s computer upload instructions. You can instead use another app that explicitly supports your EPUB and layout; simply renaming the file extension does not convert a book.
Kobo eReader: non-protected EPUB over USB
For a non-protected EPUB, connect the Kobo to your computer with a data-capable USB cable. Tap Connect on the reader, copy the file to the KOBOeReader drive, safely eject it, then disconnect. Wait for the import and look in My Books. Kobo says files added this way appear on that reader, not automatically on your other readers or apps.
Follow Kobo’s non-protected EPUB instructions. This USB method is for the eReader; the Kobo phone app has a separate import workflow.
Check the layout before settling in
Open the table of contents, a page with ordinary paragraphs, and any illustrated or bilingual pages. Check that accented letters and other scripts are present and that captions, translations and pictures stay together. Try the text-size controls if the edition offers them. Some layouts keep a fixed page design rather than reflowing like a plain-text book.
If import fails, confirm that the download finished and that you selected the actual EPUB, not a receipt or a compressed folder. Consult the official help for your chosen app. Do not assume another copy of the same failed upload will solve a layout problem.
Official workflows checked on 20 October 2026. App interfaces can change. Purchases and full-book downloads are not enabled in this preview.
