BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND NOUNS
Word Order and Sentence Building
Subject-Object-Verb (SOV)
The most important rule to remember is that Punjabi uses a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order.
This is different from English, which uses Subject-Verb-Object (SVO).
In English, you say "I eat an apple." In Punjabi, you say "I an apple eat."
The verb typically comes at the very end of the sentence.
Flexibility and Emphasis
The verb typically comes at the end in neutral SOV order, although Punjabi word order is flexible and other elements can sometimes appear after the verb for emphasis or discourse purposes.
Adjectives come before the noun they describe (e.g., "red car" stays "red car").

Making Positive Statements
Forming Affirmative Sentences
To make a basic positive statement, you often use the verb "to be" (is/am/are) as a linking verb at the end.
• For "I" (Main) and "We" (Asin), use ਹਾਂ (haan).
• For "He/She/It" (Singular), use ਹੈ (hai).
• For "You" (Tusi), use ਹੋ (ho).
• For "They" (Oh - Plural) and third-person plural nouns, use ਹਨ (han).
Example Sentences
1- ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਾਂ।
(Main khush haan.)
(I am happy.)

(Oh mera dost hai.)

Forming Negatives and Questions
Using "Nahi" (Not)
To make a sentence negative, you simply add the word ਨਹੀਂ (nahi) before the verb.
For beginners, it is best to always keep the helping verb at the end to ensure grammatical correctness.
Asking Questions
For Yes/No questions, you can simply add the word ਕੀ (Ki) at the beginning of the sentence.
Alternatively, you can just raise the pitch of your voice at the end of the sentence, exactly like in English.

Nouns: Gender and Number
Masculine vs. Feminine
Every noun in Punjabi has a gender: masculine or feminine. Even objects like tables and doors are assigned a gender.
• Masculine Rule: Often end in -ਾ (-a) (e.g., Munda - Boy).
• Feminine Rule: Often end in -ੀ (-i) (e.g., Kuri - Girl). However, there are many exceptions (words ending in consonants) that you must memorize.
Cultural Tip: The Power of "Ji"
In Punjabi, ਜੀ (Ji) may be added after a name or title to show respect, especially when addressing elders.
• Without Ji: ਪਾਪਾ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। (Papa aa rahe han.)
• With respectful Ji: ਪਾਪਾ ਜੀ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। (Papa ji aa rahe han.)
Using "Ji" makes your sentence sound polite and culturally appropriate instantly.
Singular and Plural
• Masculine Plural: Change the final -ਾ (-a) to -ੇ (-e). ਮੁੰਡਾ (Munda) → ਮੁੰਡੇ (Munde)
• Feminine Plural: Add -ਾਂ (-an) or change -ੀ (-i) to -ੀਆਂ (-ian). ਕੁੜੀ (Kuri) → ਕੁੜੀਆਂ (Kurian) ਕਾਰ (Car) → ਕਾਰਾਂ (Caran)

10- ਬੱਚਾ (Baccha) → ਬੱਚੇ (Bacche)
(Child → Children) - [Masculine]
Articles and Determiners
No Direct Translation for "The" or "A"
Punjabi does not have exact equivalents for "a" or "the". The context usually tells you if a noun is specific.
• If you want to say "a" or "one", use ਇੱਕ (ikk).
• If you want to specify "this" or "that", use demonstratives like ਇਹ (eh) or ਉਹ (oh).
