STORY 1

The Secret of the Hand-Woven Carpet

The pungent scent of damp earth and wool fibers filled the twilight atmosphere of a small shop located in the labyrinth of the Vakil Bazaar. Faint rays of sunlight crept in through the latticed, roofed openings of the bazaar, making suspended dust particles dance in a luminous column and illuminating hundreds of colorful carpets.

Haj Fattah, with a composure born of decades of experience with warp and weft, sat in the corner of the shop. He adjusted his special glasses on his nose and busied himself with inspecting one of the rugs in the shop. The echo of hesitant footsteps on the uneven cobblestones of the bazaar broke the trance-like silence of the chamber.

A young man with a sun-scorched face, showing signs of working in harsh conditions, appeared at the threshold of the shop. Clutching a worn leather bundle to his chest, he stood waiting after a brief greeting. Haj Fattah lifted his head from the rug and nodded in response to his greeting. The young man's gaze was full of unbridled anxiety that seemed rooted in an urgent need.

The young man, while averting his desperate gaze from the piercing eyes of the old man, began to speak with a tone mixed with hesitation. He explained that this rug was the only keepsake he had inherited from his grandmother. With a slightly trembling voice, he said that now, due to the bitter circumstances of life and to cover his mother's medical expenses, he was forced to sell this family keepsake.

The old man, with a gentle motion, gestured for the young man to spread the rug on the floor. As the carpet unfolded, complex arabesque patterns were revealed. The exquisite vegetable dyes, which had acquired a special maturity over time, caught the experienced eye of Haj Fattah. He inquired with curiosity about the authenticity of the carpet and the birthplace of the weaver of this artwork.

The young man replied, explaining that his grandmother was named Rana, came from one of the remote villages around Kashan, and had spent her entire life at the carpet loom. The familiar name stirred a memory in the old man's mind, but he said nothing. Haj Fattah knelt down and ran his calloused hands over the soft pile of the carpet with a fatherly caress. The coherence of the weave and the delicacy of the knots seemed flawless. However, something in the asymmetrical border of the carpet strongly caught his attention.

The border knots, contrary to the usual practice, were tied in a distinct color and arranged in an irregular pattern. He addressed the young man with a questioning tone: "I have no doubt this carpet holds high artistic value, but these border knots look very strange. It is as if the weaver consciously broke the order of the pattern." The young man, who was clearly oblivious to the subtleties of carpet weaving, shrugged.

He confessed that his only concern was paying the hospital bills and he knew nothing of the secret behind the carpet's weave. Haj Fattah said no more. He picked up his silver-handled magnifying glass and stared more closely at the irregular knots. His heartbeat quickened noticeably. These were not merely incorrectly tied knots; a cryptic pattern had been formed amid the warp and weft.

Each combination of knots represented a letter according to a code inspired by the Abjad alphabet—a code he and a young carpet weaver had agreed to use years earlier. The old man, without wanting to reveal the existence of the hidden message in the carpet, offered a very generous amount, far beyond the value he had estimated for the rug himself. The young man, with tears welling up in his eyes, took the money and left the shop.

Haj Fattah brought a notebook with yellowish paper and, with exceptional meticulousness, transcribed the combination of knots onto the paper. After hours, a brief but shocking message was revealed. Written on the paper was: "Forgive me that I lacked the courage to stay. Our love is alive in this warp and weft for eternity." Haj Fattah took a deep breath and wiped away a teardrop that had fallen from the corner of his eye—a keepsake of an unfulfilled love that had finally found its way to him after sixty years.
